3.S.1A.4- Analyze and interpret data from observations; measurements; or investigations to understand patterns and meanings.

The teacher will discuss with the class about endangered species and extinct species and show a video. The students will be able to ask questions and give comments after the video. The students will be placed into groups of four to work on a research project where they will choose and investigate an endangered species. The students will analyze and interpret data on their endangered species; using graphs, informational texts, observations, reliable videos, and reliable websites of their choosing. The groups will investigate their animals food source, location on a map, characteristics, habitat, and unique behaviors. They will also work to find patterns and meanings on why their animal is endangered by researching the animals biggest threat to survival. The different groups will all be investigating a different endangered animal and will present their findings to the class using a group presentation. The groups will each present a poster with maps, graphs, and data supporting what they found on their endangered species and present how the class can help their animals existence.

Video: Why animals become endangered.

Good questions to ask during the lesson:

  • What evidence can you present for your animals biggest threat to survival?
  • What solutions would you present for saving this animal?
  • Are the scientists helping the animal by raising and keeping the animal in a secured habitat, or should the animal be moved into the wild when they are old enough?
  • What are some causes and effects of your animals endangerment?
